Getting back on track

Ok so it's been a while since I posted anything (let alone in my original planned sequence…) so this one will leave off from after the battle.

So our moral still at euphoric state after winning our 1^st battle, we wanted to make sure the gigs kept rolling so we booked spots at as many places we could find, this however was Port Elizabeth circa 2003 places in which bands could jam were few and far between L so here is what I could vaguely remember [Dv]8 gig list in no form of chronological order:

• Urban Connection – Corporate War*, [Dv]8* and Chemical Bliss*
  
• Tapas – we played a few here if I remember correctly mostly with the scene* however once we did jam with Stone Throw (UIT)
  
• Andre Rabie – this was a battle as well I think if not it was a festival J
  
• Woodridge – festival with quite a few bands was amazing but got rained out L
  
• Blue Water Bay Festival – this was our biggest gigs yet we opened up a festival with all the big guns playing J
  
• Jack Hammers* - this was most of the scene's regular hangout we played a boat load of shows here and a lot happened within the band here specifically member changes but we'll get into thatJ
  

So that sums up the rough gig listing I will be expanding on them as we go along.

*the 3 asterisked bands were initially the only bands jamming in PE WOW yes

*Jack Hammers cool lil dingy metal/rock club in central since then it has turned into a steak house and just recently back into a metal club called Jesters but this it to follow

The 1st Battle…

Ok so now back to the story which I realize now that ive been neglecting to finish, lol the days and times hehe.

So as [Dv]8 we were together for a total of 2 months and we played around 3 or 4 shows my memory is a little bit shoddy you'll have to excuse me on the details, when our high school decides they will host a battle of the bands, to be judged by big PE band BGF (BestGoFight). Wow what an experience this could prove to be.

Now our measly 2months was going to prove to be tough to compete against New Noise (at the time I think they were together around 8months to a year I could be wrong) and Circus (really professional and been jamming around 2 years together) so yes this seemed daunting enough, and then to also be the "heaviest" out of all the bands performing is never a good thing at these sort of competitions L

So we practiced our asses off till gig night and we went on 1^st or 2^nd not too sure but the crowd loved us and all in all had an amazing gig, one of my most memorable onesJ.

After a nail biting wait for judges (Devon, Nick, Sean, Chris and Juan) to make a decision on a winner they decide to break it down further into categories (just adding to tension):

• Best Drums – which I believe was Dean "Porp" Simpson of Circus
  
• Best Bass – I really can't remember L
  
• Best Guitar – could well have been one of the Circus guitarists Matt De Lange or Matthew Potts not sure yet again L
  
• Best Vocals – I couldn't believe but it was me J I recall getting carried onto the stage by the ppl in the crowd and losing a shoe in the process WOW BLISS J
  

And last but not least the most important announcement of all the winning band….

*Drum Roll*

[Dv]8! Yes after 2 months of jamming the judges thought we put on a good enough show to clinch it, music was tight and crowd appreciation was outstanding!

Socially Speaking

Ok so over the last 2 months there have been a number of developments in and around my life, that got me thinking about people and the decisions they make.

fundamentally what are our biggest obstacle as people? well personally i think its coping with difference! This can be in many senses IE Ethnicity, Authority, Gender,Financial etc wherever one finds a shift in perspective there will be an issue.

To over come such difficulty I think is where the test comes in, and not how light or dark your skin is, how many people you command, how fat your pockets are lined or what lie's between your legs.

It is in adversity that we are able to find out who we really are, it's in that defining moment we realise who the hero's are, in order to navigate the depths of the water you mustn't be afraid to leave the shore!

So shine for thats all you can hope to achieve!

2009 What a year…

Well this has defiantly been an involving 365 and ¼ days thus far. So much to tell, lets break it down into scenes.

Scene 1: The Band

 

Ok so after being in quite a few bands the one that I enjoyed the most was Burning The Formidable which became Thornhill Tragedy, decided that the towel had to be thrown in at the death L after a good run there we failed, then I ended up joining Locus Standi had a real good run played some epic shows and had to pull out due to family responsibilities and am currently starting up a project or two ;) The Arctic Is Me…

 

Scene 2: The Family

 

Ok so after having the most beautiful and adorable daughter in the world my partner decides to leave me VERY F**KING LAME but hey shit happens, I ended up being single and having mixed feelings about the whole thing…

 

Scene3: The Life

 

Ok so this year has had quite a few developments many of which were great but don't outweigh the one that was a disaster L… I am starting a new band project see scene 1, im gonna be staring in a SA production feature file The Sudden End, starting a Rap group SaddamKillaProject, could possibly be The Face Of Police see earlier post, and yeah things are looking good for TGK and him being the great entertainer he always wanted to be J

Pigeon beats Telkom

Cape Town - Winston, a homing pigeon, has made history by beating a Telkom ADSL line in delivering 4GB of data from Howick to Hillcrest, outside Durban in just 2 hours 6 minutes and 57 seconds, whereas the ADSL download was "still just under four percent complete" at 11:45. 

South Africa's most famous pigeon, left Howick just after 10:00 on Wednesday morning and flew a distance of around 70km to deliver a data card (strapped to his leg) to financial services companyThe Unlimited at its head office in Hillcrest.

Winston easily beat the ADSL line, despite giving it a 26 minute head start, while stretching his wings and waiting for the company data to be downloaded onto the memory card.

A confident Winston flew straight to his home in Gillits, outside Hillcrest, from where he caught a short car ride to reach the Hillcrest head office.  Homing pigeons have a natural ability to find their way home from any point of departure.

Winston enjoyed huge support with messages from fans on his Facebook profile and constant tweets on his Twitter feed. 

He himself also twittered several times with comments like "flying weather cloudy and cool, feeling good, no major problems to report... Hillcrest traffic is a worry".

Right from the start, the general consensus was that Winston would beat Telkom.

Cyber Stone Age

South Africans have long lamented the country's slow internet connections and limited bandwidth. 

Despite the launch of the new Seacom cable about two months ago and promises of superfast internet at affordable prices, South Africans are still stuck in the Cyber Stone Age.

The Unlimited Group initiated the pigeon race after intensive research in alternative methods of delivering electronic data fast and efficiently.

"We came across the lesser spotted internet protocol: IPoAC or CPIP, commonly known as Internet protocol over Avian Carrier or Carrier Pigeon Internet Protocol respectively," the company said in a statement on their website.

Hundreds of fans followed Winston's historic flight online, however, many of them had to settle for Twitter updates, as, ironically, their internet connections were too slow to watch the live stream.

"Crap! Internet connection useless! Unable to watch live stream, plse post running commentary so we know how Winston's doing!,"  Jackyah333 tweeted on Twitter.

"Yeah thats why this #pigeonrace2009 is a great spectacle of telecoms inadequacy ;)" another Winston fan Kahlil_Incubus added.

According to a Sapa report, Telkom spokesperson Pynee Chetty declined to comment on Winston's win, requesting the news agency to send questions via e-mail.

Dozens of killers in Saps'

Johannesburg - Dozens of South African policemen have committed murders and rapes between March 2008 and March 2009, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has said.

In a written response to a question in Parliament, Mthethwa said more than 600 police had been investigated by the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD), which found some had also abused drugs and stolen property.

It is unclear how many faced criminal prosecution and if they are still in the police service, said the minister.

38 cops guilty of murder 

"To obtain the information would be time-consuming. The redeployment of police employees to carry out this task would be to the detriment of other essential duties or service delivery to the community," said Mthethwa.

A copy of his response was obtained by Reuters on Tuesday.

The ICD found 38 policemen "guilty" of murder, 33 of attempted murder and 30 of rape. The highest number of offenses was for theft, with 108.

Questions of credibility

"The total number of members charged (committed crimes) in the financial year 2008/2009 were 669," said Mthethwa.

The findings could raise questions over the credibility of the Saps, charged with tackling one of the world's highest rates of violent crime and making the streets safe before the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

There were 18 487 murders, 36 190 rapes, and 14 201 reported hijackings in 2007-8, according to police. 

About 50 people are murdered each day.

Meet Osiris

Ok so this is really getting to be quite a mixed up story, however I tell this now, for today I mention what's going to happen to my dog Osiris…

So il skip forward to earlier this year (2009 ;) ) myself and the wife went to the Animal Welfare to adopt a little "devil-dog" and Osiris we called him. He is light brown, a cross Alsatian and Staffie, cute lovable bastard.

Anyway this morning is his six month birthday, and he's getting snipped K so off I go to the vet, so to everyone out there, welcome Osiris and this is his last day of being a man L

The 1st Gig

So after the switch in roles we practiced for a lifetime it seemed, and turned down quite a few gigs, due to nerves I rate. Either way eventually we accepted the initial/1st/power house ;) gig which was the opening act at a friend’s 16th birthday/house party.

We got on stage and the MC introduced us as "Cell Tone", and behind the scenes we had changed our name, (on the night of our first show a name change, who the F**k does that) from Cell Tone (which I found sounded too much like the device bleh) to [Dv]8.

We had 3 songs of our own which went off like a dream the crowd loved it, loved it so much that a dude actually had his shirt ripped in the pit which he then later gave to me (weird?).

Then we played the last song of our set, the song that ppl would remember us by for some time, KoRn - Blind :)

Was HUGE....

The early stages...

Ok so back to the story, it must have been around September of 2001, myself and 3 friends from high school formed a alternative band that had no name bleh.
(Oh for the purpose of this story all the ppl involved will be renamed to some wierd sh*t)

So this 3 piece consisting of drums (myself - however i was kit-less), Guitar (The big bear) and Bass (Church boy). We found another Guitarist (Yetti) who brought to the table the name Celltone.

So now we were a 4 piece with a name and no vocalist and a drummer without a kit - bummer.

Eventually early 2002, we found a drummer with a kit so i was then phased out of that position in the band and moved into the new one, the one that would change my life/lifestyle...

Bangalore Challengers vs Chennai Super Kings

Ok so we're skipping about 8 years of this story for a bit so I can tell about an interesting evening with the soon to be introduced "copperman". It was a very compulsive decision to go watch the 1st IPL game in Port Elizabeth last night with "copperman", out pure ignorance we tossed a coin and supported the Chennai Super Kings, who posted a mammoth 179/4 after 20 Over’s, and they walked all over the Challengers winning by I think 92 Runs.

What a win, what a game.

Now going back the story and or journey.
It must have been May 2001 I joined/formed my first band an Alternative Rap Metal band called [Dv]8...

The Beginning

This is a my blog, Kahlil Carlos Mazema, it serves as my little timeline in the performing arts. As the title reveals this endevour of mine has been roughly 8 years in total. Im hoping to fill this blog with interesting pics and stories taking you through the last 8 years and further into the future of my hopefully "Career".
